“Seascapes” by Hiroshi Sugimoto shows sky and ocean views, in which the horizon crosses the frame right down the middle. According to Sugimoto, he started this series with a question: “What landscape is common to the modern and prehistoric men?” In this set he’s dealing with time, history and Intergenerational connection, while using minimalist and abstract language. For me this series raised questions concerning the past and the present, natural versus engineered and the first world versus the third world.

Upon asking myself these questions about the tailored suit, I wondered how different it would look if its design was influenced by something other than the western culture. While I was researching the history of suite tailoring, I learned about late 17th century England and the massive colonialist conquests of West Africa, including Nigeria, that was part of an area previously ruled by the Yoruba tribe.

In this collection I have combined elements from the culture of the Yoruba tribe with traditional tailoring,
and used collages and sketching in order to create new silhouettes. The colors are a combination of Sugimoto photography colors (Black, White and Gray) and the main colors of the traditional outfit of the Yoruba tribe (Red, Blue and Orange). The prints were designed using computerized processing of elements incorporated in the tribal graphics, in order to give them a cleaner sharper look like the one that can be found in Sugimoto's work.
